Domes for Government Emergency Operations & Equipment Storage / FEMA Use

By its very definition, an Emergency Operations Center or Equipment Storage facility should be indestructible and impenetrable to elements like fire, snow, tornadoes, hurricanes, seismic activity or any other natural or manmade disaster. After all, if the emergency personnel, vehicles and equipment are not safe, then they are not of much use.

Conveniently, affordable indestructibility is exactly what ABC Domes provides.

In fact, FEMA’s report entitled, Design and Construction for Community Shelters and Its Application to Domes, lead many experts to conclude that the when considering structures capable of providing a safe shelter for people in areas where hurricanes and tornadoes represent a real danger; “the Monolithic Dome, because of its very nature, heads the list for economy and strength to stand up to extreme loads and stress.”

The reinforced, concrete, double-curve surface of a dome is extremely aerodynamic and has been designed to resist winds of 400 mph. Because of the egg-shaped surface the extreme winds can be resisted easier because a monolithic dome is continuously attached throughout with steel reinforcement. Therefore, the dome solves the safety issue by utilizing the entire structure to provide ‘near-absolute’ protection.

A Safe and Well-Equipped Dome Base of Operations

When an emergency occurs, critical government services must resume quickly in order to get residents the help they need and start getting the community back on its feet. Emergency workers need a live-in command center from which to operate. Emergency equipment such as fire trucks, ambulances, or rescue vehicles — which have been safely stored for long periods — must stay completely prepared for immediate use and re-fueling at a moment’s notice.

A monolithic dome-shaped Emergency Command Center can be an accommodating and all-encompassing complex, with specific areas for vehicles and/or heavy equipment and emergency supplies; 911 and police communication centers via satellite; and a community disaster shelter.

While many communities may feel content to rely on their current fire stations as a base of operations, conventional fire houses usually have standard doors, which have little if any resistance against powerful tornadoes or hurricane force winds. Monolithic Emergency Centers meet or exceed all of FEMA’s specifications, including their drive-through doors. Those doors have large, curved, protective barriers over them, making them safe.

While appropriate for any neighborhood that needs an affordable, alternate emergency site from which it can quickly resume critical community and government functions in the event of a disaster, domes are also designed to be comfortable, calming, and practical on the inside. Living areas, conference rooms, data server rooms and laundry facilities can also be included, so workers can operate safely and conveniently from the dome for long periods of time when necessary.
